James Banks

James Banks

Hometown: Pensacola, FL
Major: Political Science
Minor: Economics
Career Goals: Attorney
Research_interests: Through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program at FSU, James worked with mentor Hashim Mallah on a research project evaluating elite sentiment in the Palestine and Israel conflict. This research project aimed to determine the actions, condemnations, and language used toward the governments of Israel and Palestine and whether they are positive or negative to each government. James started collecting data for this project by skimming through the UN resolutions marked under the section “The Question of Palestine” and sorted sentences on an Excel sheet based on whether they were calls for action for the government of Palestine or Israel. Each resolution was marked by the year and resolution number and went in descending chronological order. In the process of going through the general assembly resolution, James found that the majority of resolutions featured language that either condemned or expressed concern over Israel’s actions and supported the inalienable rights of the people of Palestine. The most common calls for Israel were to cease all settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and demands for the stoppage of violence and destruction against Palestinian people and structures. The results of these studies showed that the United Nations has a much greater tendency to condemn the actions of the Israeli government rather than those of Palestine. The results also showed that the exact verbiage and sentences were used repeatedly throughout the resolutions and that the United Nations tends to build on sentences from previous resolutions, demonstrating that this is an ongoing issue that continues to change rapidly.

Stephanie Leon

Stephanie Leon

Hometown: Homestead, FL
Major: Political Science
Minor:
Career Goals: Stephanie's greatest aspiration is to attend law school, earn her J.D., and dedicate her career to public service. She hopes to bridge the gap between those who understand the law and those most affected by it. Ultimately, she aims to give back to the communities that have supported her by providing legal assistance to individuals facing difficult circumstances. Her goal is to serve those who need it most and make a meaningful impact through advocacy, compassion, and a strong commitment to justice.
Research_interests: Stephanie’s research interests focus on law, social justice, and public policy, particularly how legal systems impact marginalized communities. She is passionate about exploring family law reform to better support non-traditional families, as well as investigating issues related to political advocacy. She hopes to center her work around bridging gaps between legal theory and real-world applications to promote equity and access to justice.  Stephanie conducted undergraduate research under the guidance of Dr. Benjamin Gunter at Florida State University through the UROP program. Her project examined the role of St. Augustine as a Loyalist stronghold during the American Revolutionary War, with a particular focus on the political use of prisoner exile and parole. She investigated how British forces used parole—a form of house arrest—as a means of control, and how refusal of parole could result in harsher punishment. Her poster featured the case of Christopher Gadsden, a prominent Patriot leader who was exiled to St. Augustine in 1780. Because he refused parole, Gadsden was imprisoned in the Castillo de San Marcos for 42 weeks, where he endured psychological torment and starvation. Stephanie's research revealed how the treatment of prisoners reflected deeper tensions in the Revolution, showing it was not only a fight for independence but also a struggle over justice, identity, and the power of political retaliation. This research highlights the human cost of war and invites further inquiry into how wartime policies shape long-term social and political dynamics.

Research_interests: Sydney’s research interests span several interdisciplinary fields, reflecting her commitment to understanding complex issues at the intersection of science, health, and society. She is particularly drawn to topics related to public safety and criminology, with a focus on how systemic factors, mental health, and access to care influence criminal behavior and community well-being. Her interest in biology and healthcare stems from a desire to explore the physiological and molecular foundations of health, disease, and treatment, especially within underserved populations. Additionally, psychology plays a central role in her academic focus, as she is fascinated by the connection between cognitive processes, behavior, and emotional resilience. Sydney is passionate about research that bridges these fields to inform more effective, compassionate approaches to public health and policy. By integrating biological sciences with social understanding, she hopes to contribute to meaningful advancements in both society and healthcare through research.  Sydney participated in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) at Florida State University under the mentorship of Dr. Keller Sheppard. Her research, conducted internally at FSU, focused on a project titled “Understanding Assaults on the Police: A Systematic Review on the Strength, Limitations, and Future of National Data Sources for Empirical Research.” This project involved critically evaluating major national databases used to study assaults on law enforcement officers, identifying gaps in data quality, reporting consistency, and accessibility. Sydney analyzed how these limitations affect the validity of empirical research and what improvements are necessary for future studies to better inform public safety policy. This experience deepened her understanding of the intersection between criminology, public health, and policy analysis. Moving forward, the project’s findings may guide recommendations for more standardized and comprehensive data collection, with the potential to shape future research and improve officer and community safety outcomes.
Community Involvement: Throughout the 2024–2025 academic year, Sydney remained actively engaged in several clubs and organizations both on FSU’s campus and within the Tallahassee community. In addition to her campus involvement, Sydney participated in Dance Marathon where she was stood and danced for 20 hours for the children at UF's Shands hospital who are not able to live the life of a "normal" child. This has shaped Sydney's experience at FSU and has provided insight to all aspects of life, this is something she will continue to do for her next three years at FSU. She also began volunteering with Big Bend Hospice, where she supports patients and families during end-of-life care—an experience that has further solidified her passion for compassionate, patient-centered medicine. These experiences have enriched her academic journey and strengthened her desire to serve others through healthcare.

It explores the relationship between environmental conditions and health outcomes, particularly focusing on Medicare-funded hospitals. By integrating organizational theory, this research seeks to provide actionable recommendations for policymakers and healthcare administrators, helping to shape a future where healthcare institutions can thrive financially while promoting better health outcomes in the face of environmental challenges.

Asia Louis

Asia Louis

Hometown: Memphis, TN
Major: Communications and Creative Writing
Minor:
Career Goals: As an aspiring novelist, Asia hopes to publish her first fantasy novel soon after graduating from college. Her writing draws inspiration from the everyday, focusing on small moments and ordinary interactions to uncover the deeper truths within them. She wants her stories to encourage readers to pause, reflect, and consider the world around them, especially the subtle forms of injustice or prejudice that often go unnoticed. While fiction is her passion, Asia is also continuing to explore the full scope of her Communications major. She is interested in both the creative and technical sides of the field, and how storytelling can be both artful and impactful across different platforms. Although she does not have a fixed career path yet, she is excited to keep learning, writing, and discovering new ways to shape ideas and share them with others.
Research_interests: Asia is interested in researching injustices that are hidden within unconventional mediums where people might not expect them. In 2024, she explored this through a research project on the prevalence of orientalism in Hollywood, using the movie and book Memoirs of a Geisha to highlight how such narratives can reinforce harmful stereotypes.   Under the supervision of faculty mentor Tara Hackett through UROP, Asia did research focusing on three Victorian petit point tapestry purses, analyzing their fibers, hardware, and designs to trace their evolution and historical significance. By examining elements such as synthetic dyes, metal clasps, and chained straps, she was able to date the purses to the late 1800s, a period marked by major shifts in fashion and material production.
Community Involvement: Asia has been involved in organizations such as Alliance of Black Women, and 2025 Homecoming Executive Council, The Center for Health Advocacy and Wellness, The Big Event, and The Goat House Farm.

His project combined economic history with policy analysis, aiming to quantify long-term effects of federal aid on development. The research suggests that areas receiving early funding often saw accelerated infrastructure growth and higher vehicle adoption in subsequent decades. The project was conducted internally at FSU and has implications for understanding how foundational government programs shaped modern economic geography.
