Julia conducted research at Florida State University through UROP examining homicides of individuals with disabilities committed by their caretakers. Under the guidance of faculty advisor Dr. Brendan Lantz, she investigated cases reported in media sources, compiling them into a database. Julia collected data on victim and perpetrator demographics, circumstances of the crime, and red flags preceding the incidents. Her goal was to identify patterns that might help law enforcement or social services intervene before crime occurs. This revealed common risk factors, including financial motives, struggles with mental health, and prior reports of neglect or abuse. Julia’s work highlights the need for improved data tracking and preventative strategies within vulnerable populations. She plans to continue this research, improving and expanding the scope of the database to identify more patterns in these crimes.
